Welcome to Black Dragon Kenpo Karate-Jutsu Tips. In this session we will discuss the blocking strike sequence of soft blocking setting up the hard strike. We will now consider one sequence. They are as follows:
Now, let us consider soft outside blocking motion.
Note: [The Outside Blocking within this session will only consider the Outside motion concerning blocking to the outside of the upper extremities; arms, wrists, elbows etc…,]! Blocking to the inside of the upper extremities will be covered in another session.
In Black Dragon Kenpo Karatejutsu, the practitioner 99.999 percent of the time delivers all outside blocking motion with the same leg forward as the blocking arm, hand, wrist, etc,. This helps create power in the block arm , as well as creating the striking set-up with both upper extremity striking limbs. [ Notice, here that this eliminates the Neutral Bow and sets up a forward bow stance analogy]! This also helps provide a solid root for the soft block to execute. Here again one can find that by using this outside blocking motion analogy. The waist can perform the hard work with ease and the blocking arm , etc, is left
to
perform other defensive actions on the block . This concept also tends to side
with the
Yang [ Shao Yang of defenders blocking arm]. Therefore, the Shao Yang can dissipate into Tai Yin [continued control of the dissipating Tai Yang attacker strike], as the Blocking arm transforms into it’s Counter-Striking Analogy as Weak Yin [Shao Yin of defender blocking arm]. Thus, transforming into the devastating Strong Yang [Tai Yang same hand] Counter-Striking Motion.
Remember, that the Neutral Bow would have the practitioner starting from weak yin on the block with the defenders weight transferred to the trail leg. Thus, defender body weight and power will have to transfer to the blocking arm and leg before the effective counter can start with either upper extremity limb. Therefore, some degree of drag is created on the block by the neutral bow stance, shifting to and from blocking to same-side counter-striking transition state application.
This is not to acknowledge that the neutral bow is an ineffective counter-striking stance to execute off of the blocking analogy. It is a very formidable counter blocking stance when it is applied in the process of executing inside soft blocking motion. Note, this effectiveness applies only when the inside blocking motion in executed with the opposite arm is blocking and the defenders opposite leg is becoming the trail. {Example; Right inside block to attacker left arm, as defenders left leg steps back to form the bow: and vice-versa}. This provides a positive flow from trail leg to front leg and right arm as a counter-striking weapon off the initial soft block. Drag is so minute that it is basically unnoticed here.
However, as mentioned above. The neutral bow is not the stance of choice on the advance for the soft outside blocking motion in setting-up the hard striking counter!
So, the Chinese- Okinawa analogy of stepping forward and rooting on the blocking leg, while using the waist to help dissipate attacker force in the execution of outward same-side blocking proves stable. Therefore, by-passing drag and eliminating wasted motion on the same-side blocking transfer from block to Counter-Striking limb.
